How to Verify your CNA Certification/License

It can take 1 to 6 months to complete training to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, or CNA. When you have completed the training, you must sit for an exam that will certify and license you as a CNA. A license number is assigned to you that will let you work as a CNA in any healthcare facility that has need of them. It’s also possible for you to work as a freelance private CNA. As time goes on, you may forget to renew your CNA license and will need to verify whether or not it’s still valid.

The good news is that there’s a process that verifies whether or not your CNA license is still valid. It’s not very complicated, either. You start out by finding out the telephone number and address of your local CNA licensing authority and registry office. Just log into the Nurses Aid Registry and enter your state’s name in the search bar. Your local information will pop up.

Next, check the registry site of your state for online registration. Some states, such as California, have an online verification system in place that tells you immediately what the status of your certification and license is. For states that don’t have this capability, it’s necessary to personally get in touch with your local state registry office.

You’ll need to take your licensing information with you if you have to personally visit the registry office. This includes your certification number, license number and the issue date. If you don’t have this information, your social security number should be enough because it’s registered with your license at the time of issue.

Most of the time, local registry offices have an automated system that directs you to what you need. There’s a small fee you’ll have to pay for the verification process. This amount is different from state to state.

You have 2 options for getting a copy of your license and certificate. The license may be mailed to your home and takes about 2 weeks to get there. You can also choose to have it emailed to you. Usually, it’s better to choose a printed hard copy because it shows the original seal of the licensing authority. It’s also possible to check your license status with an independent organization. An employer will do this with your certificate when you’re required to submit it with a job application.

Be sure to contact the registry office of the specific state where you were licensed. Other states aren’t going to have this information unless you transferred it.

I didn’t know that a CNA licence had to be renewed, I always thought once you earned it that was it. At least this post outlines ways to check whether it’s expired and what to do about it.
