If you’re in high school and already know that you want to pursue a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant, or CNA, or take college classes to become a nurse, there’s a way to get a jump on doing just that. You don’t have to wait until you’ve graduated high school, either. For high school students that are motivated and do excellent work in school, there’s the option for them to take college courses while still in high school.

This is known as PSEO, or post-secondary education option. Anyone that’s interested in taking college nursing courses can start out by completing a CNA course. Since CNAs are required to learn how to provide general care to patients such as dressing, feeding, taking their vital signs and bathing them, it’s a great way to find out if nursing really IS for you.

If you’re interested in learning more about PSEO options, the first thing you need to do is speak with your high school guidance counselor to see if your school even offers this. In the event that it does, find out if you qualify and which colleges are approved. High schools pay for the PSEO students to take their college classes until they graduate from high school.

Once you find out that you qualify for PSEO, speak to the admissions specialist of the college you want to attend. This is the person that can answer all of your questions regarding their procedures and policies regarding PSEO students. Take a parent along with you and complete all of the required paperwork.

The next thing you’ll want to do is speak to a college counselor specializing in nursing classes. You can find out more about their program and get some assistance in planning your schedule. If this is the college you’ll be continuing your education at, this is the time to inquire about any other classes you can take while in high school.

Once you’re ready to move on this, get enrolled in the CNA program. There will be two portions to the program. One is classroom and textbook instruction and the other one is clinical hands-on training. This program usually lasts one to two months in length.

Next, you’ll need to take your exam so you can become certified. Once you’ve passed the classroom training and clinical training, you must be able to successfully pass an exam. You’ll be asked to take a written exam as well as pass a skills exam. Once you’ve passed both portions of the exam, you receive you’re certification.
